The 65-year-old man, Carl Isom-McDaniel, is alive and recovering after the Yellowstone bison attack earlier this month. According to interviews he gave from his hospital bed:

• He suffered a broken femur in four places and other fractures and bruises.
• He underwent surgery to repair his leg.
• He has already begun standing and starting physical therapy, but faces a lengthy rehabilitation. 

McDaniel said the impact with the ground was actually worse than being hit by the bison. He also said he believes the animal could have killed him but didn’t:

“He could have stomped on me; he could have gored me… and he did not.”

His 13-year-old grandson, who was with him, was not injured. McDaniel intentionally ran in a different direction to draw the bison away from his grandson. Witnesses then rushed in, yelling and clapping to distract the animal until it left. 

Interestingly, witnesses said McDaniel and his grandson were about 100 yards away and were not harassing or approaching the bison, suggesting the bull was unusually aggressive during the mating (rutting) season. 

Overall, the latest reports are encouraging: he survived a very serious attack, his injuries are healing, and he is expected to recover, although it will likely take months of rehabilitation.
