Small Aircraft Crashes Into Beijing’s Tallest Skyscraper, Prompting Major Emergency Response

BEIJING, China — June 26, 2026

A small aircraft crashed into Beijing’s tallest skyscraper Friday evening, sending debris onto the streets below and triggering a large-scale emergency response in one of the world’s most tightly controlled urban airspaces.

The aircraft struck the upper floors of the 109-story CITIC Tower, also known as China Zun, located in Beijing’s central business district. Witnesses reported hearing an explosive sound before seeing glass and aircraft debris fall from the building. Emergency crews, including police, firefighters, and ambulances, quickly surrounded the area as nearby roads were closed and portions of the district were evacuated.

Images circulating online showed damage to the tower’s glass façade, with at least two shattered exterior panels visible high above street level. Videos posted to social media captured debris falling onto nearby streets before many of the clips were rapidly removed from Chinese social media platforms.

Authorities have not yet released an official statement confirming the cause of the crash, the identity of the pilot, or whether anyone inside the aircraft or building was injured. Several eyewitnesses described an unusually large police presence shortly after the incident, while access to the surrounding area was heavily restricted.

The aircraft is believed to have been a small light aircraft operating near Beijing before losing its intended flight path. Because civilian aircraft operations over central Beijing are subject to some of the strictest airspace restrictions in the world, the incident has raised immediate questions about how the aircraft entered the city’s restricted airspace.

Standing 528 meters (1,731 feet) tall, CITIC Tower has been Beijing’s tallest building since its completion in 2018 and serves as the headquarters of the CITIC Group along with numerous financial and corporate offices.

Investigators are expected to examine flight records, aircraft maintenance history, air traffic communications, and any available surveillance footage to determine what led to the unprecedented collision.

As of publication, officials have not confirmed casualties, and the investigation remains ongoing.
